Hello I will be teaching Machine Shop at our High School and it will be my first semester in the fall. We have only lathes and mills and a surface grinder. Can anyone recommend a text?

Thanks in advance

George Tolstov

PS we also include arc and tig welding.

Hello George

First of all you can join the VMS and stay logged on without having to do the "guest" security thing.

Second, even though I taught for 15 years the books I have after retiring for five are probably out of print. Publishers do not hold on to a books too long and come out with a new books every year to discourage the used book business. Looking up at my shelf I can see 13 that I used or was given (they are liberal with desk copies for teachers). I  taught mostly from Thomas Olivo's books.

Hi George,

It's not so much of a textbook, but "Machine Shop Essentials, Questions and Answers", by Frank Marlow, PE, is an excellent learning book for young machinists.

It's the book I used when taking vo tec classes.

Good luck with your shop class, and come back often.

Hi George
Some good books past my desk "old school" stuff with lots of forgotten knowledge
"Machine Shop Practice Vol 1&2" ISBN 978-0-8311-1126-7 & ISBN 978-0-8311-1132-8
as yet I have not found any books written with today's kids in mind, not that were worth a ___!

A new book has come out that I was quite impressive to me.
Photos and graphics very clear and in color.
Text very good and current.
Best price of any shop text.
Also available as an E-book for $45
I am now using that book along with the training materials on this site as well as at the Fox Valley Technical College web site.
